For a relaxing start to your plane journey, make sure that you get a good night’s sleep before setting off and never leave home on an empty stomach. You should opt for light, filling meals, which do not contain stimulants.

Where clothing is concerned, opt for comfort and functionality rather than elegance. Loose fitting clothing and comfortable shoes will make your journey more comfortable.

At high altitude, feet tend to swell up. To avoid bloating in your legs and feet, particularly for long haul flights, loosen the laces on your shoes and regularly move your feet and legs:

• Don’t remain in the same position for too long, especially if you cross your legs
• Remaining in a seated position, slightly rotate, flex and extend your ankles
• Throughout the journey, stand up and walk a few steps from time to time, which will improve your blood flow
• Finally, if you suffer from circulatory problems, consult your general physician who will prescribe a preventive treatment for you if necessary

If you are lucky enough to be setting off for the winter sun, don’t forget to bring along warm clothing for the return trip. Arriving back at the airport can often be quite a shock due to the change of temperature.

For added relaxation, plan on bringing along earplugs, an anti-light mask, an inflatable headrest and a sweater.
