The much-anticipated second Hobbit film, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, hits cinemas in the UK this Friday, and as per the first film, the stunning scenery of New Zealand will provide the backdrop for the hit movie.

Film buffs can follow in the footsteps of Bilbao Baggins and Gandalf by visiting some scenic areas close to the film locations with Austravel. And it’s clearly a popular choice - Tourism New Zealand has said that nearly one in 10 (8.5%) visitors have cited The Hobbit Trilogy as a reason for visiting the destination.

New locations close to Marlborough
Tourism New Zealand has revealed four new film locations for director Peter Jackson’s latest blockbuster, including the Pelorus River in the Marlborough region of the South Island.  Located half way between Blenheim and Nelson it is the setting for ‘Forest River’ in The Hobbit. Combine a visit to the river with a stay in Christchurch and Marlborough with Austravel, the Australasia specialist.

Enjoy an eight day self-drive trip which includes a one night stay at the Chateau on the Park in Christchurch, a two night stay at Peppers Awaroa Lodge in Abel Tasman and three nights’ at the Scenic Hotel in Marlborough before returning to Christchurch for a final night. This offer starts from £1,549 per person and includes return flights from London Heathrow with Qantas. Based on April 2014 departures.

Tour the Hobbiton movie set
Holidaymakers keen to experience the ‘Shire’ - the picturesque home of the Hobbits - can do so by visiting the farmland of Matamata in New Zealand’s North Island. The two-hour tour takes us through some of the film’s most iconic settings, finishing with refreshments at The Green Dragon pub. Rebuilt for The Hobbit Trilogy, the set is now a permanent tourist attraction. We can take a trip to Hobbiton during a holiday in Auckland and Rotorua – which is a 45 minute drive from the attraction. Austravel has an eight day holiday on offer with prices from £1,249 per person for departures in April 2014. The offer includes a three night stay at Rydges Auckland, two nights at Rydges Hotel Rotorua and a two night stay at the Pauanui Pines Motor Lodge on the Coromandel Peninsula. Four days’ car is also included.
