Lindblad Expeditions

For those seeking the adventure of a lifetime to the White Continent and surrounding regions, Lindblad Expeditions is offering a 24-day trip to Antarctica South Georgia and the Falkland Islands that will include free airfare for the November 7, 2013 departure (based on round-trip economy group flights Miami/Buenos Aires) * for those who book by March, 31, 2013.

As part of this journey, we will have the opportunity to spend two days in the Falkland Islands.

An archipelago comprised of more than 700 individual islands, the Falklands are home to the largest albatross colony in the world, thousands of Gentoo, Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins and herds of sea lions and elephant seals.  In addition to getting up close with the wildlife, we will also have the opportunity to go ashore and experience the capital of the Falklands – Stanley — where we can walk along the white sandy beaches, relax in one of the local pubs, or learn about the history of this port city.

The itinerary also includes a stop at South Georgia Island, four days in Antarctica and several days at sea aboard the National Geographic Explorer .  This state-of-the-art expedition ship is a fully stabilized, ice-class vessel making it possible to navigate polar passages while also providing exceptional comfort. It also carries kayaks and a fleet of Zodiac landing craft that allow passengers to get up close and experience the region firsthand.  While aboard the ship, we will enjoy international cuisine with a local flair as well as a host of amenities including a fitness center and spa.

There are also numerous lectures led by specialists so that we can learn about the region and its unique wildlife, and every voyage aboard National Geographic Explorer is accompanied by a National Geographic photographer.  Take advantage of an exclusive onboard documentary film workshop, taught by award-winning National Geographic photographer and filmmaker Cotton Coulson and David Wright. We may also learn how to capture our expedition experience on video, to edit it, and ultimately, to create a highly personal documentary to share with friends and family.

Rates for the 24-day journey start at $20,740 per person based on double occupancy.  For more information or to make reservations, visit www.expeditions.com or call 1.800.EXPEDITION (1-800-397-3348).

“All the animals and land throughout the planet are held in trust by us. We have no right to destroy or change this heritage so that it becomes unrecognizable. We have a duty to pass the planet along to future generations in as unspoiled a way as possible. This requires intelligence, foresight, understanding and creative effort.”  - Lars-Eric Lindblad from his book Passport to Anywhere

Quark Expeditions

Quark Expeditions, the leader in polar adventures, announces the newest member of its fleet, the Ocean Diamond. This ‘Super Yacht’ will be the first to deliver CarbonNeutral® voyages to Antarctica, another addition to the company’s long list of polar “firsts.”

Quark will offset the emissions of the Ocean Diamond, the company’s newest ship, thereby offering the first carbon neutral voyages in polar travel history. Travellers to Antarctica, one of the world’s most remote and remarkable destinations, will be guaranteed to have a “green” experience at no added cost to any of the 189 passengers.

“Since the company’s inception, Quark has been committed to environmentally responsible tourism,” said Hans Lagerweij, president of Quark Expeditions. “By operating the Ocean Diamond Antarctica voyages as carbon-neutral, we show it’s possible to visit incredible places and preserve them for future generations. The average emissions per passenger are significantly lower than some former Quark vessels.”

Carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are the largest source of climate-altering greenhouse gas emissions. In order to neutralise the effects of Quark’s Ocean Diamond voyages on the environment, Quark Expeditions will offset an estimated 5,682 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) with select hydro, wind power and reforestation CarbonNeutral® projects based in Turkey, Kenya, China and India.

By offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions from the Antarctic Ocean Diamond voyages with these projects around the world, Quark is effectively neutralising more CO2e than an entire space shuttle flight. It’s the same as removing 1,114 cars from the road for one year and Quark is leading by example by setting the industry standards for carbon offsetting.

The offsets assessment was conducted by The CarbonNeutral® Company, a world leading provider of carbon reduction solutions, and the projects supported will be part of The CarbonNeutral® Company portfolio. The inaugural voyage of the Ocean Diamond will depart on 3 November 2012 on the Falkands, South Georgia and Antarctica itinerary.

There are three once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic itineraries on board the Ocean Diamond that last between 10 to 20 days. The voyages aboard the Ocean Diamond offer the perfect opportunity to discover the best of the Antarctic region and its iconic sights such as penguins, seals and whales whilst enjoying modern amenities. There are a host of optional activities such as photography courses, camping and kayaking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing across enormous snow fields and mountaineering which present the opportunity to get up close and personal with the big ice and the wildlife. An on-board polar library stocked with fascinating books and periodicals and expert-in-residence talks will enhance the overall Antarctica experience.
