Abercrombie & Kent

Nothing can prepare you for the grandeur and diversity of Africa, and there is no better way to explore all the continent has to offer than by private jet. For those who want to do and experience more, Abercrombie & Kent’s private jet safari travels the length of Africa (March 2-20, 2014),  seamlessly combining illuminating cultural experiences with extraordinary wildlife in remote destinations, difficult to reach in comfort by any other means. Geoffrey Kent will personally host the group during a three-night Tanzania safari experience.

Join an intimate group of 40 privileged guests on a privately chartered jet, visiting seven countries in 19 days to discover Africa at its most authentic. Come face to face with rare mountain gorillas in Uganda and marvel at the Great Migration in Tanzania’s Serengeti alongside A&K founder Geoffrey Kent. Experience Zambia’s extraordinary beauty from your private tree house on the Zambezi River at Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma camp. Take the “flight of the angels” helicopter tour over Victoria Falls and marvel at the 700-foot dunes along Namibia’s Skeleton Coast.  Celebrate the end of your African adventure with the epicurean delights of the Cape Winelands in South Africa.

“Travelling by private jet allows guests to experience Africa at its most rewarding, to spend days immersed in the wonders of the continent, rather than in transit,” explains Geoffrey Kent. “Arriving and departing when it makes the most sense, instead of on an airline’s schedule, allows us to devote more time to natural and man-made wonders, meet some extraordinary people, and stay at camps and lodges in remote wilderness areas.”

The carefully crafted Africa: Across A Continent by Private Jet itinerary incorporates the following must-see destinations in Africa:

Ethiopia | Ancient Churches (2 nights)

Explore the remarkable rock-carved churches of Lalibela where a local priest shares the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Learn about the discovery and archaeological significance of “Lucy,” one of the world’s most important early human fossils. Meet local dignitaries at a private cocktail reception.

Uganda | Mountain Gorillas (3 nights)

Set out with an experienced forest guide in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of a gorilla family. Watch them forage, play and interact in their natural Ugandan habitat. Meet the local Batwa people for a chance to talk, hike and engage in a mock hunt with these traditional hunter/gatherers. Visit a local hospital supported by Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy which has reduced infant mortality by 50%.

Tanzania | On Safari with Geoffrey Kent (3 nights)

Experience the Great Migration in the Serengeti in the company of A&K founder Geoffrey Kent. Hear stories of his life growing up in East Africa over gourmet bush dinners at a private tented camp. Witness a Maasai tribal dance. Meet researchers helping to conserve cheetahs and lions.

Zambia | Victoria Falls (3 nights)

View Victoria Falls by helicopter, the best way to appreciate the staggering scale. Walk hand-in-trunk with an elephant during an once-in-a-lifetime encounter. Meet with locals in Nakatindi Village to learn firsthand about their day-to-day life. Relax during a sunset safari cruise on the Zambezi.

Botswana | Wildlife Along the River (3 nights)

Search for wildlife on guided game drives in Africa’s most elephant-rich park on an unforgettable Botswana safari. Cap each evening with a tranquil cruise down the Chobe River.

Namibia | Desert Dunes (2 nights)

Cruise Walvis Bay on a private boat, keeping watch for birds, seals and dolphins. Explore the desert dunes, the setting for a feast of a lifetime, complete with sparkling wine delivered by parachute and a performance by local musicians and fire spinners.

South Africa | The Finale (1 night)

Take in panoramic views of Cape Town from atop Table Mountain. Enjoy a performance by the Cape Minstrels during sundowners on scenic Signal Hill. Gather for a gala farewell dinner on a private island.

Deep roots and long-established relationships — as well as 11 permanent, full-time offices in Africa — allow A&K to offer unique encounters and inspiring experiences to is travellers that are not available to others. Because of this privileged access, Abercrombie & Kent is voted “Best Africa Tour Operator” year after year by travel professionals at the World Travel Awards.

Comfort In the Air

Travelling by private jet brings an entirely new level of comfort and convenience to an African journey. Abercrombie & Kent’s privately chartered Boeing 737 provides an elegant onboard experience. Roomy, comfortable business-class seats allow us the opportunity to stretch out and relax between destinations. A bar stocked with premium brands, along with a well-chosen wine list, provides the finishing touch. As you cross the African continent, your flight crew travels with you, learning your preferences and helping to make your aircraft a familiar and inviting space, every time you take to the air.

Unrivalled Experience On the Ground

A journey is only as successful as its guide. Leading this expedition is a Tour Director chosen from the top ranks of A&K’s international coterie of professionals, who oversees everything from start to finish, relying on a lifetime’s worth of knowledge to show guests the Africa only locals know. A Tour Manager assists the Tour Director in providing seamless service, while local guides join your party throughout the journey to lend additional insight. A&K’s Travelling Bell Boy® collects your luggage when you leave each hotel and ensures it is waiting in your room when you arrive at your next destination.

Accommodations in each travel destination are always the best available, selected to reflect the given location’s spirit and style.  They may be elegant lodges, lavish resorts or remote bush camps, but all offer a distinctive sense of place, gracious hospitality and inspiring views. This is enhanced by the exclusive use of most properties, including Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma in Zambia, with its unique tree house villas; A&K’s mobile tented camps and Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero in Botswana. With a typical stay of three nights in each destination, there is time to relax and appreciate the pristine beauty of the surroundings.

Meals are more than just a chance to dine at the end of the day — they are a complete feast for the senses, with local entertainment and stunning natural backdrops that turn every meal into an event. Dine in the Tanzanian bush accompanied by a troop of Maasai tribal dancers. Catch your first glimpse of astonishing Victoria Falls at a private picnic on a ridge overlooking the waters, with a local choir providing the accompaniment.

Fairmont Culture Travel 2013

It has been said that “Culture is the sum of all the forms of art, of love, and of thought,” and one of the most profound ways to experience culture is through travel. Whether contemplating traditional Peking Opera or marveling as a graffiti artist practices his craft, experiencing the art of a destination is key to understanding it. For everyone interested in the ancient and the modern, the fine and the popular, Fairmont hotels have forged partnerships that give us access to artistic endeavors the world over.

Artists, in Residence

Fairmont has had a long history of supporting local artists, with many periodically hosting artist-in-residence programs. This year The Fairmont Banff Springs celebrates 125 years of hospitality and is launching a program in partnership with Mountain Galleries. Each month the artist chosen by Mountain Galleries will live and paint in the hotel for one week. They will work in designated spots throughout the hotel, giving us the opportunity to watch the art come to life. The program will give us the chance to become inspired artists ourselves with the Artist in Residence Package. Available the third week of every month, the package includes two nights luxury accommodation, welcome reception and an artist led seminar. Rates start at $249 CAD.

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is in the midst of planning a 2013 Summer Young Musicians in Residence Program in partnership with PianoSonoma that will bring a variety of talented young artists to the resort.  Gifted young Julliard artists will perform complimentary concerts in the Lobby Living Room, which will feature cameo performances from celebrated soloists.  PianoSonoma is a unique music festival that brings together Young Artists, current conservatory music majors or recent graduates, and adult musicians to collaborate and perform in private and public concerts and outreach workshops in Sonoma County. Summer rates at the resort start at $439 USD.

The Fairmont Dallas has welcomed its first Artist in Residence of 2013, Phoenix-based graffiti artist DOSE. After twenty years as an urban artist working on abandoned public spaces and warehouses, DOSE gradually began to create multimedia graffiti art on canvas, a more traditional medium. Most recently, his colorful work has been featured in the Phoenix Art Museum and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Currently DOSE is living full-time in one of the hotel’s luxurious 25th floor suites and working in a glass-front studio located on the hotel’s “O” level. At the conclusion of the residency, a custom piece will be donated to the hotel’s permanent art collection. For art lovers, The Discover Dallas Art Package includes a private lesson in the “Art of Making Art” with The Fairmont Dallas’ Artist-in-Residence, an ongoing program with rotating artists throughout the year, and a lesson in the “Art of Buying Art” with a representative from The Gallery at The Fairmont. We can also explore the Dallas Arts District with two tickets to the Nasher Sculpture Center, located just steps from the hotel. Rates start from $169 USD per night.

This summer at Colorado’s Fairmont Heritage Place, Franz Klammer Lodge we can discover the rich history of Telluride through the eyes of knowledgeable local, Ashley Boling. The Telluride Historical Walking Tour provides a look at the mining town turned ski town and all the history that goes along with it. For even more insight, we can visit the Telluride Historical Museum, which will receive a $25 USD donation for each reservation. We will enjoy two- or three-bedroom accommodations, which sleep a maximum of six and eight people, respectively. The Telluride Historical Package includes tickets for the Telluride Historical Walking Tour for two, entrance to the Telluride Historical Museum for two, complimentary airport transportation from Telluride or Montrose Airports and complimentary valet parking. Available June – August, 2013, rates start at $850 USD for a three-night stay.

Artist McAlpine Miller was inspired by stars from The Savoy’s rich history for a new collection of paintings that were unveiled in mid November.  To celebrate, the iconic London hotel has created an Icons Package to allow us to follow in the footsteps of some of these famous visitors and experience the property’s exceptional Personality Suites. The package includes one night accommodation in a Personality Suite, which honors just a few of the more high-profile figures who made The Savoy their London home - Noel Coward, Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra and Richard Harris. The package also includes a special tour with the Hotel Archivist, breakfast, a bottle of Champagne in room upon arrival and a £100 GBP spa treatment credit per person. Available year-round, rates start from £1,600 GBP.

”A hotel for the outdoor adventurer and alpinist,” was the vision of Cornelius Van Horne, general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway. By 1892 The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise was a mountaineer’s paradise, complete with guides from the Swiss Alps taking past guests into the great outdoors – and in 1997 this tradition was revived with an in house team of modern Mountain Heritage Guides. The history of the Railway and Mountain Heritage Guide program comes together with the Heritage Railway Hotel Package. The package includes accommodation and an activity for two with the hotel’s Mountain Heritage Guides, where we will hear stories from days past, learn about wildlife and pick up tips on how to make the most of our journey. Also available is a self guided tour of the Mount Temple Wing lobby gallery, detailing the history of The Chateau, the development of the railway and the Lake Louise area. Available year round, rates start from $359 CAD.

Beatlemania swept across North America and Montréal in the early 60s, and on September 8, 1964, they gave two concerts during their only visit to the city, when 21,000 adoring fans descended on the Montréal Forum. That night, the Fab Four were to stay at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth after their performance, but fearing a riot, the authorities recommended they leave town instead. Not wanting them to fly out on an empty stomach, the hotel’s Room Service Captain whipped up a special meal that he delivered to the concert hall.  Fifty years later, Pointe-à-Callière Museum is revisiting history with an exhibition about the mythical band. The Beatles in Montréal package includes one night accommodation, admission for two at the exhibition and souvenirs. Available March 29 through the end of the year, rates from $239 CAD.

Art Inside & Out

Fairmont Pacific Rim was designed by James Cheng, the architect whose green glass towers helped create the term “Vancouverism,” which combines the best of Asia and the West Coast. Building on this artistic legacy, the hotel displays an array of photography, is home to two large public art pieces, features two art exhibitions and is a strong partner of the local artistic community. This year the hotel has created a seasonal package that allows us to experience all of this with the Designed to Perfection package. The package includes accommodation in a Deluxe Room, signature welcome amenity with the hotel’s “Room for Passion” book, a self-guided art & design tour of the hotel, Guided Architecture tour of Vancouver with the Architectural Institute of BC, VIP Passes to the Vancouver Art Gallery and a picnic lunch from Giovane. Rates start from $499 CAD.

Fairmont Grand Hotel Kyiv’s Art Package shows off the high style of this fast-growing European city. With an international reputation for cutting edge culture, The First International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Ukraine, ARSENALE, turned heads in 2012 (and will again in 2014). Including two-night’s accommodation, the package includes a private tour of the Pinchuk Art Center, an international centre for 21st Century art founded by billionaire philanthropist Viktor Pinchuk. Book today and scratch safari off your bucket list. Select departure dates between April 01 - May, 31 2013 and August 11 - 30 September 2013. Prices starting from $2,779 per person.

This package includes flights, a stay at the trendy Protea Hotel Fire & Ice, a full day tour of the Cape Peninsula plus an African safari, with so much more…

Day 1 Depart from New York or Washington DC for your South African Airways flight to South Africa.

Day 2 On arrival in Johannesburg you will connect onwards for your 2 hour flight on South African Airways to Cape Town. On arrival you will be met for your transfer to your hotel, Protea Hotel Fire & Ice.

Day 3/4/5 The next few days are at leisure to explore the beautiful city of Cape Town.

After breakfast you will be met by your local English speaking driver-guide for your full day tour of the Cape Peninsula. Depart the hotel and flank the colder Atlantic Ocean en route to Hout Bay. Once a fishing community, now one of the most popular residential areas, the harbor still has a charm of days gone by. A chance to join the M.V “Circe” for a half hour cruise to “Seal Island” or for the not so adventurous, the fish market “Mariners Wharf” is a must. The tour now continues over the famous Chapman’s Peak drive – if open, with a 200 meter drop on one side and a 200 meter rise on the other, as we make our way south, following the Atlantic Ocean until we reach Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. Said to be the romantic meeting place of the two mighty oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian, Sir Francis Drake the Explorer once called it “the fairest Cape that we saw in the whole circumference of the Globe”. And rightly so, it must be the highlight of any visit to the Mother City, if not South Africa. Our optional lunch stop today is at the Fish Hoek Galley. We pass the naval base of Simonstown as we continue along the Indian Ocean, en route to see the Jackass penguin colony which has become well established at Boulders Beach near Simonstown. Our last stop of the day is at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, home of some 3 500 species of Southern African fauna and flora. We return to the hotel in the late afternoon, having seen some of the best the Cape has to offer. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis at the Protea Hotel Victoria Junction

Day 6 After breakfast you will be met and transferred to Cape Town International Airport for your flight to Johannesburg. On arrival in Johannesburg, meet your driver-guide for your road transfer to the “Big 5” Pilansberg Game Reserve. Apart from the “Big 5”, there are 50 other species of large mammals, 354 species of birds and 132 species of trees. A wide variety of other rare mammal species also exist in the park, such as the nocturnal brown hyena, the fleet-footed cheetah and the majestic sable antelope. The lodge site is particularly favored by both black rhino and white rhino, and sightings of lion and elephant are frequent. The nearby cliffs are home to klipspringer and rock hyrax and provide strong updrafts for Verreaux’s Eagle and many more soaring marvels.

Day 7 A host of nature and safari activities are on offer from daily morning and afternoon game drives in open game vehicles with dedicated game rangers to walking trails through the Pilansberg wilderness. Refreshment breaks have been included on your game drives to make your safari experience that much more enjoyable. Meals are enjoyed at the lodge.

Day 8 After breakfast and an early morning game drive you will be transferred to Johannesburg Airport for your flight to the United States.

Day 9 Arrival in the United States at New York (JFK) or Washington Dulles (IAD) airports.
